Born and raised in Amarillo, Texas, Derik developed a passion for soccer at a young age. At just 8 years old, amidst a lack of competitive soccer clubs in his hometown, he embarked on his soccer journey, driven by a love for the game that would shape his future.

Facing the challenge of limited opportunities, Derik persevered until his freshman year of high school when the first soccer club in Amarillo was formed. Despite the geographical constraints, his dedication led him and his team to travel extensively every other weekend for club play, journeying to cities like Oklahoma City and Dallas-Fort Worth.

His talent and commitment were quickly recognized, earning him a spot on the North Texas State Team during his Junior and Senior years of high school. Additionally, his exceptional skills caught the attention of scouts, resulting in an invitation to the prestigious Region III camp during his senior year.

Continuing his soccer journey, Derik pursued higher education at West Texas A&M University, where he showcased his prowess on the field for four years. His outstanding performance led to him being named to the All MidWest Region team during his senior year, solidifying his reputation as a standout player.

Post-college, Derik transitioned seamlessly into coaching, a natural progression fueled by his passion for the sport. He honed his coaching skills with FC Dallas, dedicating several years to nurturing young talents and imparting his knowledge and love for the game.

Although coaching held a special place in his heart, Derik made the difficult decision to step away from full-time coaching duties when he started a family. Nonetheless, his influence and impact on the soccer community continue to resonate, both as a player and a coach, leaving an indelible mark on the sport he loves.
